Fathers Day Gifts

The main purpose of Father's Day gifts is just to show your father that you care. A lot of the most popular gifts for Father's Day are simple trinkets, little things that your dad might use but probably won't need. That doesn't mean that just any gift will do, however. Try getting your dad the same wallet you got him last year, or a shirt in a color he doesn't like if you don't believe me! It may not be a major holiday, but it's important to know enough about your dad to get him a Fathers Day gift that he will consider thoughtful.

Most every dad has a hobby. Knowing the one that entertains your dad in his spare time will make it easier to pick out an appropriate Father's Day gift. My dad is extremely easy to buy for because he is such a collector. He has an extensive coin collection as well as a display case filled with scrimshaw work. Therefore, right away I know that I can get him either some scrimshaw, some collectible coins, or perhaps a book or tools related to his hobby.

A couple years ago, however, I decided to take a risk. Usually, I find him a pretty piece of scrimshaw sometime during the year, or a couple rare coins to give as Father's Day gifts. He appreciates the presents, but I can tell that they are sort of hit or miss sometimes. You see, my knowledge of Coin Collecting and scrimshaw is not very expansive, so it's hard to get him exactly what he wants without asking. But last Father's Day, instead, I decided to get him something a little bit unusual: some fake ivory, a set of carving tools and a book about getting started making your own scrimshaw.

When he first opened them, I could tell that he didn't know what to make of his gifts. Soon, however, his puzzled look turned into a grin and I knew that he liked his Fathers Day gifts. I wasn't sure if he would ever try carving or not, but I had heard him talk about it a couple times in the past and figured that he would appreciate the opportunity. I thought that maybe he would make a couple secret carvings, decide that they weren't good enough to show and put the tools away. That was my father – he loves trying new things, but he was a little bit embarrassed to show off his crafts.

When I visited him in a few months, however,I discovered that he had put the Father's Day gifts that I had given him to good work; he had a whole display case filled with carvings, and some of them were quite good! Apparently, according to my mom, he had become somewhat obsessed. He had spent the whole month making carvings and had found a new hobby in the process. Needless to say, I was happy that I picked him out such a nice gift.
